When fighting in low-light environments or seeing targets clearly, most people will choose monocular night vision devices or binocular monocular night vision devices. If the budget is more abundant, you can use binocular night vision goggles.This type of night vision device contains two image intensifier tubes, so that the binocular vision can be superimposed, so that a stereoscopic image field of view can be obtained. Binocular night vision can provide better night vision, but it does not increase the size of the field of vision. In order to obtain a better night vision experience and a wider night vision field than binocular night vision, a panoramic night vision device is needed, which is what we often call a four-eye night vision device.
Whether they are monocular or binocular, often only provide a 40° field of view. Because the night vision image of binocular night vision will appear in actual use, the image will be synthesized by the human eye. Therefore, the human eye can only see one night vision image, so it does not increase the night vision field of view.
The panoramic night vision device can basically be regarded as a set of binocular night vision devices, but there are a set of lens barrels on both sides. Therefore, some people think that it is possible to simulate the effect of panoramic night vision by raising two monocular telescopes next to the conventional binocular night vision device. But in reality, this doesn't simulate its effect very well.
The field of view of the panoramic night vision device is not separated. In order to obtain a coherent field of view, the structure of the panoramic night vision device is quite compact, and the two eyepieces are cut off a small part, and the two eyepieces are placed closely, so that the two night vision fields of view are merged. This method is called eyepiece fusion.
The field of view of the panoramic night vision device is shown in the figure below. After the human eye synthesizes the field of view, the actual night vision field of view looks like a pod.
The origin and evolution of panoramic night vision devices
In the beginning, panoramic night vision goggles were developed to give pilots a larger field of view during night missions. Compared with conventional night vision devices, panoramic night vision devices can provide a larger field of view. Conventional night vision devices only have a 40° field of view, while panoramic night vision devices can provide a 97° field of view. Therefore, using a conventional night vision device requires frequent turning of the head to see the surrounding environment. But panoramic night vision can reduce the range of swinging your head.
Experience feelings
The feeling of shooting with panoramic night vision is similar to shooting with conventional night vision, and all the essentials and methods of shooting with night vision still apply. The main difference is that the shooter gets a larger field of view.
When aiming with a panoramic night vision goggle, the weapon's sights and night vision goggles work well together. The panoramic night vision device makes up for the shortcomings of the conventional night vision device. Since the panoramic night vision device can provide a larger field of view, the shooter does not need to take the night vision device's field of view away from the sight to see the surrounding environment.
