There are two types of infrared detectors on the market: cooled and uncooled. Cooled detectors operate at cryogenic temperatures, uncooled at ambient temperature.
When choosing an BRI thermal imaging camera, should I choose uncooled or cooled?
What parameters should I be concerned about with regard to IR detectors?
Well, first we need to know the difference between them. After understanding these differences, you will know how to choose an BRI’s infrared detector for your product.
BRI uncooled detectors are the best choice for close range targets and those that do not require very high quality thermal imaging. And, if you’re on a tight budget, it's the one for you, too.
Cooling detectors are used to detect targets with minimal temperature changes, long distances, and fast moving speeds.
Are you familiar with cooled and uncooled thermal imaging cameras? In fact, thermal imaging cameras with cooled detectors have some advantages over thermal imaging cameras with uncooled detectors. However, they will also be more expensive. BRI cooled cameras have an imaging sensor with an integrated cryocooler, such as the C640, which cools the sensor down to cryogenic temperatures. Reduction of sensor temperature is necessary to reduce thermally induced noise to levels below the signal of the imaged scene.
Both refrigeration and non-refrigeration have their own advantages.
If you want to view tiny temperature differences, need the best image quality, with fast/high speed applications, if you need to view thermal profiles or measure the temperature of very small targets, if you want to visualize very specific parts of the electromagnetic spectrum for thermal phenomena, or If you want to synchronize your thermal imaging camera with other measurement equipment... BRI cooled thermal imaging camera is the instrument of choice.
