Infrared radiation can be divided into infrared long wave, medium wave and short wave, which have some differences in wavelength and application.
Penetration: The penetrating ability of infrared radiation increases with wavelength. Infrared long waves have high penetrating power and can penetrate some thinner materials, such as plastics, cloth and smoke. Medium wave penetration is relatively weak, while the penetrating ability of short wave is stronger. It can penetrate most of the smoke and fog, but it is difficult to penetrate thicker materials.
Detection capability: Infrared radiation in different bands has different detection capabilities for different object characteristics. Infrared long waves are more sensitive to thermal radiation and are suitable for thermal imaging and temperature measurement. Medium wave has strong detection ability for thermal and reflected radiation, and are suitable for target identification and tracking. Short wave has the strongest detection ability for reflected radiation, and is suitable for target detection under strong light interference.
Different application: Infrared radiation in different bands has different applications. Infrared long-wave is commonly used in temperature measurement, building heat loss detection, night vision and search and rescue. Medium wave is suitable for military reconnaissance, fire detection, security monitoring and industrial applications, etc. Infrared shortwave is widely used in heat treatment industry, military target detection, solar energy research and other fields. It can be used for high-temperature object viewing, monitoring of heat treatment process, target identification and tracking in military reconnaissance, and research and observation of solar radiation.
