The thermal imaging camera consists of a lens, a thermal sensor, processing electronics and a mechanical housing. The lens focuses infrared energy onto the sensor.

All objects emit infrared energy, known as a heat signature. An infrared camera (also known as a thermal imager) detects and measures the infrared energy of objects. The camera converts that infrared data into an electronic image that shows the apparent surface temperature of the object being measured. In layman's terms, a thermal imaging camera converts the invisible infrared energy emitted by an object into a visible thermal image. The different colors on the thermal image represent different temperatures of the object being measured.

Many infrared cameras also include a visible light camera that automatically captures a standard digital image with turned-on fusion mode. By blending these images it is easier to correlate problem areas in your infrared image with the actual equipment or area you are inspecting.

Cooled thermal imaging cameras are high-performance devices that operate within a vacuum-sealed enclosure and are cryogenically cooled.  This cooling increases their sensitivity, allowing them to detect temperature differences as small as 0.02°C (20mk).  While these imagers offer excellent performance, they are expensive.
Uncooled thermal imaging cameras operate at ambient temperature.  They are engineered to detect temperature differences as small as 0.2°C (200mk) and are robust enough and much cheaper than cooled thermal imaging cameras for everyday use.  Uncooled thermal imaging cameras are the first choice for a variety of applications, from routine industrial inspections to security surveillance.
